Added 2008-07-29: I just noticed that Mark/Space released Missing Sync for Symbian today. I don’t use my M600i anymore (I bought an iPhone instead), so I haven’t tried it, but this allows for syncing your Symbian phone and your Mac, including syncing files. I would suggest that you take a look at it.
It seems that the SonyEricsson M600i identifies itself as a Communications device. This causes Mac OS X not to mount it. This code-less kext makes Mac OS X recognize the M600i, and according to success reports, the P990i (W950 supposedly works out of the box), as a Composite unit, thus making Mac OS X mount the mass storage device.
Some questions answered (yes, I made up some of these):
Q: I only see the memory card
A: Yeah, that’s the way the phone works.
Q: It doesn’t work.
A: Tough luck. But do verify that the phone is in File transfer mode, not Phone mode (check Control Panel->Connections->USB on the phone). If it still doesn’t work, I don’t really know what might be wrong. You could however post a comment here.
Q: It makes some other stuff not work.
A: Definitely tough luck. However, let’s just say like this, the only thing that I see is reasonable to break is support for other cell phones from Sony Ericsson. And if it actually does, please contact me (though a comment here).
Q: How do I remove the darned thing?
A: First of all, be careful when you do this. You don’t want to delete the wrong files when you do this. I take no responsibility for what you do or what might happen when you do it, or anything else for that matter. You have been warned. You can remove this by deleting /System/Library/Extensions/M600USBFileEnabler.kext
Got other questions? Comment.
To reiterate. I take no responsibility for anything with this file. Use this at your own risk. For all I know your phone and computer might explode and your house might burn down from using this. It does work for me, but that is no guarantee that it will work for you. Download this only if you understand that I take no responsibility what so ever.

Per: Is it using a M600i? Have you restarted your computer after the installation, or otherwise loaded the kext? Is the phone in file transfer mode?
If all of those are true, and you have Xcode installed, you could always contact me using some IM protocol (there’s a bunch of addresses on the About Me page), and we can try to figure out what’s wrong.

What’s about a plugin ISync 2.3 for the SE M600i ?
8 Magnus Nordlander // Jan 11, 2007 at 16:34
Sadly, that is not as easy to do as this. iSync does not yet have support for the new method of connections for synchronization used in the UIQ3 units.
The way I see it, there are basically two options in handling this. The first is to wait for Apple to fix this. My guess would be that it will be fixed in either an update to Tiger or Leopard. The other option is to make an application similar to the one used for synchronization of PocketPCs and Macs. That is however not an easy task, and I am sure that anyone capable of creating such an application would be awaiting the release of Leopard, to make sure that the all work they have done will not be redundant once Leopard is released.

10 Magnus Nordlander // Jan 11, 2007 at 18:54
From what I’ve read those are files that should be on every memory stick, and I don’t know what happens if you remove them. You could of course try to remove them, but I for one would not.
If you don’t want them showing up in the Finder, I think you can use the .hidden-method to hide them from the finder, and then set the FAT-attribute of that file to be hidden as well. However I do not know how to set FAT-attributes in OS X.

57 newformula.org » Make your Mac and Sony Ericsson M600i (or P990i) friendly // May 9, 2007 at 0:11
[...] According to Magnus Nordlander, the M600i is recognised by the Mac as a communications device when connected via USB – a modem of sorts, but a pretty useless one when in this mode. Selecting File Transfer in the M600i USB settings does nothing to help the situation, so Magnus developed a .kext system extension which fools the mac into treating it as Mass Storage device, allowing you to mount the memory card (but not the M600i’s internal memory) on your desktop, which opens a whole realm of other possibilities in getting media to and from your phone. Thanks Magnus – this is REALLY useful. [...]

Hi! First of all, thanks for your Extension. However, it does not work with my old 10.3.9 powerbook. Updating to Tiger is not as easy as this is a very old G3. I had a look at the plist and found the following lines: … idProduct 57392 idProductMask 65520 idVendor 4046 …
When using the system profiler, my m600i has the product id 57393. I changed it in the plist, restarted and put the phone to file mode – however the device does not show up. Are there any additional things i should change in the plist?
Best regards
Johann
62 Magnus Nordlander // May 26, 2007 at 11:48
It’s not as simple as just entering a different product id, that one should have been covered by the ProductMask anyway.
As I do not have 10.3.9 I don’t really know what to change, but I can give you some general tips. The first is to use USB Prober (included in Xcode) instead of system profiler, it is better suited for the task. Secondly, I would pretty much just try to read up on using codeless kexts under Panther, and also USB devices under Panther.
What the kext does is to match product ids to a mask and set that these should be handled as mass storage devices instead of communication devices.
63 Johann // May 26, 2007 at 14:21
Thanks for your fast reply! I spent the last hours searching and must confess i haven’t dug much up… i read through USB driver matching (http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1076.html) and saw that a device should best be identified by idVendor + idProduct + bcdDevice, which is what I did then, by supplying the data gathered with USB prober. I could not find out the product class anywhere, but maybe it is not needed? When I restart (or reload with kextload – by the way, unloading the module does not work) my m600i still does not get mounted. USB Prober shows a “Interface #0 – Mass Storage/SCSI” Device, but this does not mount… I have also tried to match version numbers in the Info.plist to those in the other kexts, and the kext itself loads without errors. Sorry to bother you, but I am a non-programmer and I guess just don’t know what to do now. Do you have some reference about writing kext files?
All the best
Johann

I am pretty set on purchasing a SE990i but discouraged from lack of support for Mac. This freeware seems great. I have two questions: Do you have any info on how to successfully upload video files created on a Mac in iMovie/Quicktime files? I need to be able to upload and easily play video for presentation purposes and have to confirm that this is possible first before I purchase 990i. Secondly, can Microsoft Entourage calendar, address book, and any accompanying Office notifications be transferred from Mac 10.4.8 to the 990i and work fine? This function is also very important. I’ve been searching for over a year for a smartphone/PDA, really like the 990i above all but these are my two most important needs for the phone, any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
DD
66 Magnus Nordlander // May 29, 2007 at 10:47
As for the first question,I am reasonably sure that it is possible, if you export the files to 3gp. I’ve also seen third party video players that might make it possible to view without exporting. No guarantees though.
As of now syncing with a mac is not possible. However I have read that SE are planning to release some sort of support for this in June. What will be included is something that I have no way of speculating over though, so I suppose you will have to wait and see.
67 PeterP in Sydney // Jun 1, 2007 at 9:33
i also have 10.3.9 with G4 iBook. It does not work for me. I would suggest from above responses this kext does not work with 10.3.9
Unable to upgrade to 10.4 at this time. Currently waiting for 10.5 then will get extra memore to go with it.
Meanwhile, I just hope some here out there finds a way to solve this for us 10.3.9′ers. It is so frustrating having a good phone and being unable to use its capabilities.
What I REALLY want though is ability to use USB modem capability of the phone. I use Hutchison’s 3 service in Sydney Australia, and really need mobile internet on my iBook. “3″’s PCCard solution is not an option because there is no pccard in an iBook. My only hope is the USB.
Anyone found a way yet with 10.3.9? Thanks for a great site.

The only way to get support for Mac in these phones is to let manufacturers know that you will not buy the devices because they do not sync with Macs out of the box. They will respond to customer demand.

Hej Magnus! Tack!! I have a P990i and had written to sony ericsson a couple of times about the problem. Each time I got a short, unhelpful, reply saying that the phone is simply not compatible with Mac and that I should contact Mac about this (and not sony ericsson!). They seem to miss the irony that they promote an open source OS on one hand but then assume the whole world uses Windows! What is Apple’s position on this? Has there been any communication from them? Anyway, I installed your file and it works well with my P990i (once I had read that I needed to go into the control panel of the phone and change the USB mode to file transfer!). Only irritating problem now is every time I connect the phone, iPhoto treats the USB device as a camera and opens up ready to import the phone’s photos… Can’t seem to be able to disable that.

Thanks for this work. My brother and I both have P990’s and Mac laptops. We both also have P900’s. He also has a 910. The 900 was a poor camera but a beautiful Mac Bluetooth-GPRS bridge for unlimited data plans on T-Mobil. It also worked perfectly with iSync (after some plist tweaking). The P990 is a better camera, much faster allowing multiple things to be done, BUT a pathetic example of the ugly and (makes me happy) FAILING Sony corporation shoving incompatibilities on customers, often even in product lines.
I can use a standard USB-USB mini cable to charge a dozen devices when I travel with my PowerBook G4 (or MacBook Pro for my brother) including Blackberry, MOTOROLA RAZR, etc. I even had invested in several spare adaptors and USB-P900 charging cables for the P900 but SONY had to go and change the incomatible-plug-style of the P900 to an even MORE incompatible-plug-style for the P990 so you cannot even leverage your investment in the P900 line.
P900 had a non-standard charger and it was hard to find compatible headphones (when even Apple’s iPod uses standard jacks for audio) but the 990 has the ugly bulky plug-in shape on the headphones also.
On top of that P990 uses a stupid new way of handling data so AddressBook/iCal synch that worked beautifully with iSync will not work with P990.
No wonder SONY keeps losing market share in most areas. Instead of focusing on making money from great compatible product sales they want to screw people from having to buy expensive incompatible and stupid formats like Memory Stick, P990 plugstyles, etc.
I was so desperately seeking P990 items to work with Macs, but now simply waiting for the incredible iPhone to offer modem-capabilities (which they have seemed to deliberately held back). Then I say Good Bye to Sony phones and the P990 is going on eBay.
Again, thanks for reducing the pain of being a SONY user. But, shame on SONY overall.

Hi, I hoped to have found this page sooner. The solution saved me from using the BlueTooth to communicate my Podcasts/Mp3s instead of this nice little working wire on my macbook pro.
Thank you very much.

Aaah, just the same as Oscar above, thank you so much
85 Tiltex // Aug 17, 2007 at 20:31
It works fine. But I sold me M600 and bought a P1, because the M600 cant be synct with the mac, new Firmware and everything, it doesn’t work. I have enought, after 1 ear trying and loosing time. But is there a Plug-in to mount my P1 anywhre?
86 Magnus Nordlander // Aug 17, 2007 at 20:37
Tiltex: Not that I’m aware of. I’ve tried the same approach with the P1i, but that’s so far been unsuccessful.
87 Tiltex // Aug 17, 2007 at 20:46
Thank you. I will see here later, maybe you will try , pleasae do it, I wish you good luck!

hi magnus! first thanks so much for making this great little extension. it worked great all those months with my p990i. i just bought a p1i and encountered the same problem on tiger as everybody. i used usb prober and found that the id product of the p1i is different than the m600i (obviously). i replaced the 57392 of the m600 by the 57490 of the p1i, saved the kext, removed the old m600 kext and replaced it with the modified one, restarted the computer, plugged the p1i and the memory card now appears normally on the desktop.
as you are the creator of this extension, i wanted to ask you if you wouldn’t mind if i share this information and the modified kext on the my-symbian.com forum, as there seem to be a lot of people facing that issue (and not everybody is gonna instantly switch to leopard too when that’s gonna be released). or maybe you could make the modified p1i extension available for download on your site ? whatever you decide, thx again for your input!
89 Magnus Nordlander // Aug 18, 2007 at 19:26
Interesting that you got it to work, I tried the exact same thing. Feel free to post a modified version, although, knowing this I will update this probably some time tomorrow.
90 charles // Aug 18, 2007 at 19:29
just for your reference, i got it to work on a powerbook g4 12″ running 10.4.10 and a macbook 13″ 2ghz also running 10.4.10. both are working like a charm.
91 thomas // Aug 19, 2007 at 0:08
charles, do you think you could post a link to the modified kext here, or post a link to the my-symbian forum thread. Because i could’nt find it..

Hi,
Thanks for the enabler. Before installing it I couldn’t get my Macbook to recognize my P990i. It still doesn’t recognize the device in the sense that I can’t use iSync but it shows the Memory Stick which is good enough for the time being. At least I can move my files on and off the phone.
Thanks a lot.

I have P990i & Mac OS 10.4.10 w/ new iSync 2.4 and still cannot sync them !
Help please.
Cheers,
RV
99 Magnus Nordlander // Oct 23, 2007 at 0:08
Sorry, this isn’t for syncing, this is for accessing the files on the memory card using the USB cable.
I have heard of success to sync the P990i with Macs, but I don’t know much about it, so keep googling.
100 fugu // Oct 24, 2007 at 22:00
jau! it works! thanks for that!
101 Hardijs // Oct 25, 2007 at 16:58
no – leopard did not change anything – got latest fw for the date (had to reset everything) – and iSync still did not work
102 ProDigi // Oct 31, 2007 at 18:07
i’m running os 10.3.9 on my powerbook g4 12″ and i’ve already installed the prober. the p1i is being detected as a communication device on the bus probe panel. problem is i don’t know how it works :-/
103 Magnus Nordlander // Nov 6, 2007 at 9:37
As it has been said earlier in the comments, this doesn’t work on 10.3.9. My recommendation is to install Leopard. Browsing files on my M600i over USB works without this kext in Leopard, so it wouldn’t surprise me if works for the P990i and the P1i as well.

I upgraded to X.4.11 and now the kext doesn’t work anymore. Just tried reinstalling. Nada. Anyone have success with X.4.11?
Best,

107 Zip Boterbloem // Nov 20, 2007 at 22:53
Hmm. My m600i doesn’t show up in Leopard either. Weird.
108 Zip Boterbloem // Nov 23, 2007 at 14:05
Forget my last 2 emails. I had to reboot the m600i. It hung. Took out the battery. restart. All is fine, it is seen by OSX.4.11

112 Dimitri // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:15
magnus, Some news to send contact from P990i to Macbook Air Léopard 10.5.4 ? I will buy an Iphone and don’t want to re-create all my contacts Dimitri
113 Magnus Nordlander // Aug 5, 2008 at 17:00
Dimitri: If you just want to send all your contacts from the phone to your Mac it’s pretty simple.
On your P99oi, open Contacts, click More, go to Contact Manager -> Back up.
There will now be a file on your memory card, under Other/Backup/Contacts called Contacts.vcf. Transfer this file to your Mac (for example by using the cable or using Bluetooth), and open it.
This should add all your phone contacts to your Mac’s Address Book.
This also works well for transferring calendar items to iCal (but they’re in Other/Backup/Calendar/).
